Interventional endoscopy (laser)
A minimally invasive solution for treating urological pathologies
What is laser interventional endoscopy?
Interventional endoscopy involves inserting an endoscope (a very fine camera) into the urinary tract to directly visualize the area to be treated.
In particular, it allows :
📌 Pulverization or fragmentation of urinary calculi
📌 Vaporization of small bladder tumors
📌 Incision of urethral stricture
📌 Laser treatment of certain prostatic hypertrophies
Everything is done without surgical opening and without visible scarring.
Indications & procedure
Indications
Interventional laser endoscopy is indicated in the following cases:
● Renal, ureteral or bladder calculi
● Endoscopically accessible small bladder tumors
● Narrowing (strictures) of the urethra
● Laser treatment of the prostate depending on the situation
● Failure or contraindication to other techniques (LEC, surgery…).
Urological lasers: precision and efficiency
Holmium and Thulium lasers enable:
✔️ Fragmentation and pulverization of calculi
✔️ Reduction of bleeding by targeted coagulation
✔️ Controlled vaporization of pathological tissue
✔️ Maximum preservation of healthy structures
📌 Dr Dominique selects the laser and parameters best suited to each situation to optimize results.
Procedure
The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia.
Main steps:
● Introduction of the endoscope through the natural tract
● Visualization of the stone or lesion on screen
● Targeted laser treatment (fragmentation, vaporization, incision)
● Possible extraction of fragments
● Possible insertion of a double-J probe to facilitate drainage
📌 Duration: 30 to 90 minutes, depending on complexity.
Benefits
✔️ Minimally invasive, incision-free technique
✔️ Highly precise gesture thanks to fiber laser
✔️ Access to difficult areas of the kidney and ureter
✔️ Rapid recovery
✔️ Excellent success rates
✔️ Fewer complications than conventional surgery
Follow-up and follow-up
Post-operative care
- Same-day or next-day delivery
- Moderate pain may occur, blood in urine may be transient
- Possible discomfort if a double-J probe is in place
- Back to business in just a few days
- Systematic consultation and follow-up imaging
Monitoring and prevention
Depending on the initial pathology, a personalized follow-up is set up:
📌 Metabolic workup if history of stones
📌 Endoscopic monitoring of bladder tumors
📌 Control of incised areas in case of stenosis
