A minimally invasive solution for treating urological pathologies

Endoscopie interventionnelle (laser)

What is interventional laser endoscopy?

Interventional endoscopy involves inserting an endoscope (a very thin camera) into the urinary tract to directly visualize the area to be treated. It allows for: pulverization or fragmentation of urinary stones; vaporization of small bladder tumors; incision of a urethral stricture; and laser treatment of certain prostate enlargements. All of this is done without surgical incision and without visible scarring.

Instructions & procedure

Indications

Interventional laser endoscopy is indicated in the following cases: Kidney, ureteral, or bladder stones; small bladder tumors accessible endoscopically; urethral strictures (stenoses); laser treatment of the prostate depending on the situation; failure of or contraindication to other techniques (ESWL, surgery, etc.)

Urological lasers: precision and effectiveness

Holmium and Thulium lasers allow: Fragmentation and pulverization of stones Reduction of bleeding by targeted coagulation Controlled vaporization of pathological tissues Maximum preservation of healthy structures Dr. Dominique selects the laser and parameters best suited to each situation to optimize results.

Procedure of the intervention

The procedure is generally performed under general or spinal anesthesia. Main steps: Insertion of the endoscope through the natural openings; Visualization of the stone or lesion on a screen; Targeted laser treatment (fragmentation, vaporization, incision); Possible extraction of fragments; Possible placement of a double-J stent to facilitate drainage . Duration of the procedure: 30 to 90 minutes , depending on the complexity.

Benefits

Minimally invasive technique, no incision. Highly precise procedure thanks to the laser fiber. Access to difficult areas of the kidney and ureter. Rapid recovery. Excellent success rates. Fewer complications than traditional surgery.

Follow-up and updates

Follow-up and updates

Post-operative care

  • Release on the same day or the next day
  • Moderate pain is possible, and blood in the urine may be present temporarily.
  • Possible discomfort if a double-J stent is in place
  • Resumption of activities in a few days
  • Routine consultation and imaging follow-up

Monitoring and prevention

Depending on the initial pathology, personalized follow-up is implemented: – Metabolic assessment if history of stones – Endoscopic monitoring of bladder tumors – Monitoring of incised areas in case of stenosis

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

What is interventional laser endoscopy in urology?

This is the set of treatments carried out through natural channels using endoscopes and a surgical laser: fragmentation of stones, treatment of prostate adenoma, incision of narrowings or destruction of small tumors of the urinary tract.

What are the advantages of lasers?

The laser allows for very precise procedures, without incisions, with minimal risk of bleeding—it can even be used on patients taking anticoagulants. Hospital stays are short and recovery is rapid.

How is an endoscopic procedure performed?

Under anesthesia, the endoscope is inserted through the urethra to reach the area to be treated, under continuous visual control. The laser fiber is then precisely guided. Most procedures are performed on an outpatient basis or with an overnight hospital stay.

Are there any particular risks?

Complications are rare: urinary tract infections, transient burning during urination, minor bleeding. Following the preparation instructions (sterile urine culture before the procedure, hydration afterward) further reduces these risks.
